DECODIT: Empowering citizens for a sustainable energy transition

As Europe accelerates towards decarbonisation, modernising homes is a critical step in achieving EU climate targets. Yet, the path to energy-efficient housing is complex, with citizens struggling to identify the best solutions and professionals facing high costs due to a lack of essential household data.

The DECODIT project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme (grant agreement N° 101160660), aims to bridge these gaps. By developing innovative, digital, co-created services, DECODIT will empower citizens to make informed decisions about upgrading their homes to be energy efficient and future-proof.

“DECODIT is about making the energy transition accessible to everyone,” says Stratis Kanarachos, Senior Consultant at European Dynamics and DECODIT Project Lead. “We are creating tools that not only provide clear, personalised guidance but also ensure that those with limited energy or digital literacy can fully participate in shaping a sustainable future.”

Piloting Across Europe
The project’s results will be validated in four diverse European countries—Latvia, Greece, Spain, and Switzerland—each presenting unique challenges and opportunities. Key pilot sites include:

  • Latvia: The Imanta Garden Complex focuses on integrating Energy Services Companies into the energy transition framework.
  • Greece: Collective Energy Cooperatives (CoEn) explore regulatory and market-based incentives for citizen investment in home upgrades.
  • Spain: The Murcia Renewable Energy Coop involves community testing of operational energy management and decision support solutions.
  • Switzerland: The ABT Hub in Capriasca showcases local energy communities self-consuming renewable energy.

Transforming the Energy Landscape
DECODIT’s holistic approach addresses the EU energy sector’s pressing needs, as buildings account for 40% of energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions. By engaging citizens directly in service design and supporting the adoption of new business models, DECODIT seeks to reshape the smart energy landscape.

“This project brings together the best of technology, regulation, and citizen engagement,” adds Kanarachos. “By demonstrating its impact in diverse environments, DECODIT will set a precedent for how we can modernise homes and meet climate targets across Europe.”

Innovative Digital Tools
Central to DECODIT’s mission is a suite of digital tools:

  • A secure personal data platform for homeowners.
  • AI-driven assistants offering tailored energy efficiency recommendations.
  • Communication apps connecting users with energy providers.
  • Advanced tools for professionals to analyse building performance and plan renovations effectively.

Collaborative Expertise
Under the supervision of market actors spanning energy suppliers, ESCOs, DSOs and energy communities, DECODIT is well-positioned to deliver impactful results. Success will be measured by enhanced energy efficiency, reduced emissions, and increased user satisfaction.
